Week 1 in Japan (87 images)

It’s been a long week, with tons of paperwork, learning, eating, photos, and definitely walking. Traveling to Machida, Shinjuku, Shibuya and Harajuku were the highlights of my week; hopefully, I’ll remember how to get back there on my own. Like many people have said before, I’ve never been to a place that served junk food. Everything I’ve eaten here has been better than anything I’ve eaten at home. The fish is super fresh; the maguro is more buttery than the $20 nigiri served at the high-end restaurants at home. The ramen is awesome, I’ll probably end up with high-blood pressure soon from all the tasty broths. Even the salad here is somehow better than what I’ve had at home. I’m a bit scared to come back to Hawaii’s “ono kine grindz” after being here.

I was surprised to see a large presence of fixed gear cyclists in Harajuku and Shibuya, with a bunch of high end track bikes just locked up in random places on the streets. I was almost amazed how most of them were locked up, a single cable lock through the rear of the tire (sometimes just the top tube) to a railing, and sometimes not even locked to a stationary object. It makes me a little more confident about locking up my bike in Tokyo when it gets here. Theft in Japan is definitely not like in the states. I can only hope for my household items to arrive soon so I can start riding again. Having to walk around everywhere made me repeat to myself, “man I wish I had my bike right now…”

The gallery I’m posting is pretty much an assortment of things that I’ve done this past week. Instead of explaining what every single thing is, I’ll just leave it to you to wonder on your own.

Awesome photos!! Thanks for the “quick trip” around parts of Japan that you’ve been seeing during your first week there!! Looks like you’re eating some awesome foods!! Keep posting the pics!! Glad you’re having fun and enjoying the scenery in spite of having to work/study so hard…

Looks like there’s some really good looking bikes over there…bet you can’t wait to get your bike so that you can start riding all over instead of having to walk, walk, walk, huh??

Had fun sharing your pics with my co workers! Keep in touch when time permits…
